“My father hides behind the veil.” She looked at the other guards and back at Kybalt. “He won’t look for me here. Please. He will never understand this world or me. I just want a chance at a life.”

“I am sorry, Princess Kathryn.” Kybalt glanced Scott’s way. His regret looked sincere, but he didn’t change his course. “We must bring you back.”

“At least give us a moment alone.” She slid her hand into Scott’s. “To say goodbye.”

Kybalt’s silver eyes bore into Scott, but Scott kept his head held high, never wavering from the guard’s stare. He didn’t know what Kathryn was planning, but he wasn’t going to say goodbye.

Finally, Kybalt nodded. “Very well, but we will be watching. You cannot stay long.”

With that, he and the guards walked toward the waves and vanished. Scott blinked and wiped his eyes. “They’re gone.”

“No, they’re right there.” Kathryn pointed. “They stepped through the veil to give us some privacy.”

“They can see us, but I can’t see them?”

“You can. You just need to believe. Think about your mother. You’re wearing the dearbh-aithne of your people. Fae blood runs in your veins, reach for it.”

“I’m trying.” Scott groaned and pulled in a slow breath.

He’d never felt more human. Shit.

Kathryn bit her lower lip for a moment and peeked over her shoulder toward the water before she met his eyes and whispered, “You have my dagger and your mother’s necklace. The veil will accept you once you embrace your heritage. When I cross over with the guards, close your eyes and think of me and the Endava forest. You have to believe, Scott. Faith makes the magic real and the veil thin.”

He bent to kiss her, and the Royal Guard was suddenly back on the beach in a heartbeat. Kathryn rose up on her tip-toes and hugged him. She whispered against his ear. “I believe in you. Follow me...”
